About the IELTS Writing band score
What the four criteria actually measure.
The IELTS Writing band score is the average of four criteria, each scored from 1 to 9 in half-band steps: Task Achievement (Task 1) or Task Response (Task 2), Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy. Each carries equal weight.
Most candidates lose half-bands not because of grammar mistakes, but because they don’t fully address every part of the prompt, or because their paragraphing is hard to follow. Our AI examiner is tuned to catch both — it’s strict about under-addressing the question even when the writing is otherwise clean.
Common mistakes we flag in Task 2 essays: a thesis that doesn’t commit to a position, body paragraphs without a clear topic sentence, repetitive vocabulary in the same paragraph, and conclusions that just restate the introduction without synthesising the argument. Common mistakes in Task 1 (Academic): describing every data point instead of selecting the main features, mixing up tense between the prompt and the candidate’s response, and missing an overview sentence in the second paragraph.
We score against the public IELTS rubric and publish how often our scores agree with real examiner results on /accuracy. If your real test score lands more than 0.5 bands away from our prediction, tell us — we’ll give you a free month of Pro and use the gap to improve the model.
